The Blue Lights Campaign
Raising Awareness to Conquer Colon Cancer

The Blue Lights Campaign, founded in 2014 by Dr. Marianne Ritchie, is a year-long initiative aiming to increase awareness of colon cancer by educating the public on the importance of prevention and early detection.

Colon cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) is a very common and often deadly disease, but with screening, it is PREVENTABLE. Unfortunately, fewer than 65% of age-appropriate Americans get screened.

The Blue Lights Campaign culminates annually in March during Colon Cancer Awareness Month that takes place in Philadelphia and beyond! This includes over 30 buildings in BLUE including skyscrapers, arenas, iconic Boathouse Row, the Ben Franklin Bridge and even the Pennsylvania State Capitol.

The campaign was recognized with the top national award for Colon Cancer Awareness from the American College of Gastroenterology for spreading this life-saving message.

Our mission is to share the news that even though colon cancer is a very common and often deadly disease, it is preventable with screenings.

Our goal is to increase screenings and reduce colon cancer deaths.

Awareness Is Key

Colon Cancer is the #2 Cause of Cancer Deaths in Men & Women.

When colon cancer is detected at an early stage, before it has spread anywhere else, the 5-year relative survival rate is over 90%.  This means that 9 out of 10 people with early stage cancer survive at least five years.

Screenings Save Lives

Unfortunately, colon cancer can form and grow before it causes symptoms.  This is where screening tests come in!

A screening test is an examination that is done before a person has symptoms in people who are at risk.  Several types of screening tests are available, so talk to your doctor and decide which test is best for you.

The most important thing is that you get tested! It’s all about prevention and early detection!
